ALEP Conference – 24th March 2015

I will be speaking at the ALEP Spring Conference at the Royal Institution on 24th March 2015 on the topic of ‘The Middleman’s Tale’ with Jennifer Ellis of Langley Taylor. We will be discussing the position of intermediate landlords and in particular the position following the Howard De Walden v Stella Kateb and Accordway [2014] UKUT 0486 (LC) decision. The full decision appears at: http://www.landstribunal.gov.uk/judgmentfiles/j1084/LRA-150-2013.pdf

The position promises to get more interesting now that the intermediate landlord in this case has sought leave to appeal the decision of the Upper Tribunal to the Court of Appeal.

I was pleased to speak at the Landlord and Letting Show at the Barbican on 25th/26th February 2015, giving two talks on “What to look for when buying a leasehold property as an investor” and “How to Add Thousands of Pounds In Value to Your Flat… by buying the freehold or extending the lease.”

Both talks were well received and there was a good Q&A session after each. If any one would like to get in contact to discuss further any of the issues raised then please do email leasehold@bishopandsewell.co.uk or visit:

LEASE Conference 2015

The LEASE conference 2015 is on 4th February 2015 at ETC Venues at Aldersgate Street, St Paul’s London.

Members of Bishop & Sewell LLP’s Landlord and Tenant Team including my colleague Chris Macartney will be on hand at the end of the day to answer leaseholders’ questions. These events normally bring up a range of issues and if you would like to get in contact to discuss buying your freehold, extending your lease or any other landlord and tenant issue such as service charge disputes, issues with leases etc, then please do get in contact, by emailing: leasehold@bishopandsewell.co.uk.

I look forward to lots of interesting questions during the rest of this week.

FPRA AGM 10th November 2014

A number of colleagues and I attended the Federation of Private Residents Associations (FPRA) AGM in Central London on 10th November 2014. I was speaking to delegates about lease extensions and buying your freehold in a number of workshops.

Other speakers included Rt Hon Keith Hill who spoke on ARMA-Q and the regulation of managing agents and the leasehold sector. The conference was expertly chaired by the FPRA’s own Bob Smytherman.

A number of interesting questions were raised by speakers, including the total number of leasehold properties in England and Wales (2.5M or 5M?), the likely figure (I believe closer to 4.2M).

If anyone would like to get in contact to discuss any questions arising from the workshops then by all means email leasehold@bishopandsewell.co.uk
